CBD Oil Strength Guide: Dosage, Potency and mg Explained

Choosing a CBD oil strength can be confusing. One bottle may display a percentage, another may show the total milligrams of CBD, while a third focuses on the amount of CBD per serving or drop.

This CBD oil strength guide explains how to compare CBD concentration, bottle size, milligrams per millilitre and estimated CBD oil drops. It also clarifies the important difference between the strength of a CBD product and the dose of CBD actually used.

There is no single CBD oil strength that is automatically right for everyone. A stronger CBD oil simply contains more cannabidiol in a given volume. It does not automatically provide greater benefits, guarantee effectiveness or determine how much CBD a person should take.

Greenhouse CBD Malta provides product information to help customers understand CBD labels and compare available formulas. We do not provide personalised medical or dosage advice.

CBD Oil Strength Explained

CBD oil strength describes the concentration of cannabidiol contained in the product.

It may be shown as:

  • A percentage, such as 5%, 10% or 20%

  • Total milligrams of CBD in the bottle

  • Milligrams of CBD per millilitre

  • Milligrams per serving

  • An estimated amount of CBD per drop

These figures describe related information, but they are not interchangeable.

CBD Oil Strength Is Not the Same as Dosage

The strength of CBD oil tells you how concentrated the product is.

The dosage or dose of CBD refers to the amount used at a particular time or during a particular period.

For example:

  • A 10ml bottle may contain 1,000mg of CBD

  • The oil therefore contains 100mg of CBD per ml

  • The amount used depends on the volume measured from the bottle

Two customers could use the same CBD oil but take different amounts. Equally, two different oils could provide the same amount of CBD while requiring different volumes.

A high-strength CBD oil does not automatically mean that a high dose should be taken.

How CBD Oil Percentages Work

Many CBD oils display their concentration as a percentage.

When the percentage represents grams of CBD per 100ml of finished oil, the approximate conversion is:

CBD oil strengthCBD per mlTypical total in a 10ml bottle
5%50mg per ml500mg
10%100mg per ml1,000mg
15%150mg per ml1,500mg
20%200mg per ml2,000mg
30%300mg per ml3,000mg

These examples illustrate common labelling conventions. Always check the actual bottle, product description and Certificate of Analysis because bottle sizes and formulations vary.

What Does 10% CBD Oil Mean?

A 10% CBD oil commonly contains approximately 100mg of CBD per millilitre.

In a 10ml bottle, this usually corresponds to a total amount of approximately 1,000mg of CBD.

However, the strength of the product should be confirmed from the label rather than calculated from the product name alone.

What Does 3000mg CBD Oil Mean?

A label showing 3000mg usually refers to the total amount of CBD in the entire bottle.

The CBD concentration depends on the bottle size:

  • 3,000mg in 10ml equals 300mg per ml

  • 3,000mg in 30ml equals 100mg per ml

  • 3,000mg in 60ml equals 50mg per ml

These three products contain the same total quantity of CBD, but their strength levels are very different.

How to Calculate CBD per Millilitre

To calculate the concentration of CBD per ml, divide the total amount of CBD by the bottle volume.

CBD per ml = total milligrams of CBD ÷ bottle volume in ml

Example: 1000mg in a 10ml Bottle

1,000mg ÷ 10ml = 100mg of CBD per ml

Example: 1500mg in a 30ml Bottle

1,500mg ÷ 30ml = 50mg of CBD per ml

The first bottle is twice as concentrated, even though the second bottle contains more CBD overall.

This is why the total amount of CBD displayed on the front of the bottle cannot be used alone to compare CBD oil strength.

How Much CBD Is in One Drop?

The amount of CBD per drop depends on:

  • CBD concentration

  • Bottle volume

  • Dropper design

  • Oil thickness

  • The number of drops produced per millilitre

A commonly used estimate is around 20 drops per ml, but this figure is not universal. The manufacturer’s product information should be used whenever it gives a specific number of drops per millilitre.

The calculation is:

CBD per drop = CBD per ml ÷ number of drops per ml

Example Using the Manufacturer’s Drop Count

A CBD oil contains:

  • 1,000mg of CBD

  • 10ml of oil

  • 100mg of CBD per ml

  • Approximately 20 drops per ml according to the manufacturer

100mg ÷ 20 drops = approximately 5mg of CBD per drop

This calculation explains the product concentration. It is not a recommendation to take a particular number of drops.

Different droppers can release different volumes, so counting drops is less precise than using a clearly marked measuring pipette.

Understanding Total CBD Content

The total CBD content refers to all the cannabidiol contained in the complete product.

For a bottle of CBD oil, this usually appears as:

  • 500mg

  • 1,000mg

  • 1,500mg

  • 2,000mg

  • 3,000mg

The total CBD content does not tell you how concentrated the oil is unless you also know the bottle volume.

Total CBD Versus CBD Concentration

Consider these products:

ProductTotal CBDVolumeCBD concentration
Oil A500mg10ml50mg/ml
Oil B1,000mg20ml50mg/ml
Oil C1,000mg10ml100mg/ml
Oil D3,000mg30ml100mg/ml

Oil A and Oil B have the same strength, despite containing different total amounts of CBD.

Oil C and Oil D also have the same strength, even though Oil D contains three times as much CBD in the complete bottle.

What Are Low, Medium and High CBD Strength Levels?

There is no universal regulatory definition of low-strength, medium-strength or high-strength CBD oil.

Retailers and manufacturers may use these expressions differently. One brand may describe a 10% oil as strong, while another reserves that term for products containing 20% CBD or more.

The clearest way to compare strength is to use CBD per ml, not marketing descriptions.

Lower-Concentration CBD Oil

A less concentrated oil contains a smaller amount of CBD in each millilitre.

It may allow the product volume to be measured in smaller changes, but this does not automatically make it appropriate or safe for every customer.

Medium-Strength CBD Oil

A medium-strength oil provides more CBD per ml while still requiring a measurable quantity of carrier oil.

The phrase “medium strength” remains a marketing description rather than a medically defined dosage category.

High-Strength CBD Oil

High-strength CBD generally refers to a product with a relatively high concentration of cannabidiol per ml.

A high-potency CBD oil may require a smaller volume to provide the same labelled amount of CBD as a weaker product.

It is not necessarily the best CBD oil for a new customer, nor is it automatically more effective.

How to Choose the Right CBD Oil Strength

The right strength depends first on understanding the product, not simply selecting the highest percentage available.

Consider the following factors before choosing.

Check the Amount of CBD per ml

This provides the clearest direct comparison between oils in different bottle sizes.

Check the Measuring Method

Look for a marked pipette, measured pump or clear information about the amount released per drop.

Review the Product Instructions

Follow the information supplied by the manufacturer and do not exceed product instructions merely because the effects of CBD are not immediately noticeable.

Consider the Type of CBD

CBD oil strength does not tell you whether the product contains:

  • CBD isolate

  • Broad-spectrum CBD

  • Full-spectrum CBD

  • CBG or CBN

  • Terpenes

  • Trace amounts of THC

The concentration and the cannabinoid spectrum describe different characteristics.

Check the Ingredients

A CBD oil contains cannabidiol or hemp extract combined with a carrier oil.

Common carrier oils include:

  • MCT oil

  • Hemp seed oil

  • Olive oil

  • Other suitable plant oils

Hemp seed oil is not the same as CBD oil. It naturally contains little or no CBD unless a cannabidiol extract has been added.

Review the Laboratory Report

A Certificate of Analysis may help confirm:

  • CBD concentration

  • Total cannabinoid content

  • THC and THCA levels

  • Other cannabinoids

  • Batch information

  • Terpenes

  • Contaminant testing where performed

A label showing a high CBD potency should ideally be supported by analysis for the relevant product or production batch.

Full-Spectrum, Broad-Spectrum and CBD Isolate

The type of CBD product can matter as much as its strength.

Full-Spectrum CBD Oil

Full-spectrum CBD oil contains cannabidiol alongside other naturally occurring compounds from the hemp plant.

These may include:

  • CBG

  • CBC

  • CBN

  • Terpenes

  • Flavonoids

  • Trace quantities of THC

The amount of CBD shown on the label does not represent the total amount of all cannabinoids in the formula.

Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil

Broad-spectrum CBD contains several hemp-derived compounds while aiming to remove or reduce THC.

A broad-spectrum product should only be described as THC-free when this is supported by the relevant laboratory results.

CBD Isolate Oil

CBD isolate is a highly purified form of cannabidiol.

An isolate oil generally contains CBD dissolved in a carrier oil without the wider cannabinoid profile associated with a full-spectrum formula.

The expression pure CBD should be used carefully. Even when the cannabidiol ingredient is highly purified, the finished oil also contains its carrier oil and possibly other ingredients.

CBD Oil Strength and Dosage Are Separate Decisions

Customers often search for an “ideal CBD dosage”, but a product’s concentration cannot determine a suitable personal amount.

Factors that may affect the use of CBD include:

  • Product formulation

  • Method of use

  • Other cannabinoids

  • Individual sensitivity

  • Other products being used

  • Medicines

  • Age

  • Health status

  • Frequency and duration of use

The amount of CBD a person is taking should not be estimated from the percentage alone.

Why Generic CBD Dosage Charts Can Be Misleading

Online charts may recommend different dosages of CBD according to body weight, symptoms or desired effects.

Such charts often fail to consider:

  • Differences between product formulations

  • Inaccurate or inconsistent labels

  • Medicine interactions

  • Individual health conditions

  • Variations in absorption

  • Current safety assessments

  • Differences between retail CBD and prescription medicines

Greenhouse CBD Malta does not use generic charts to recommend a daily dose of CBD.

“Start Low and Gradually Increase” Is Not Complete Advice

The phrase “start with a low dosage and gradually increase” appears frequently in the CBD market.

Although it sounds cautious, it is not a substitute for:

  • Reading the product instructions

  • Understanding the concentration

  • Checking the legal product category

  • Considering medicine interactions

  • Seeking professional advice where appropriate

Customers should not continually increase their CBD intake simply because they have not experienced a particular effect.

Important European Safety Information

In February 2026, the European Food Safety Authority established a provisional safe intake level of 0.0275mg of CBD per kilogram of body weight per day for certain highly purified CBD food-supplement formulations.

This corresponds to approximately 2mg per day for a 70kg adult.

This provisional figure:

  • Is not a recommended personal dosage

  • Is not a target intake

  • Applies only to specific CBD novel-food formulations

  • Does not apply automatically to every CBD product

  • Does not apply to authorised prescription medicines

  • Was established while significant scientific data gaps remain

EFSA also concluded that CBD safety could not be established for people under 25, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or people taking medication. [1]

This recent assessment is one reason Greenhouse does not recommend arbitrary quantities such as 10mg, 20mg or 50mg of CBD per day.

Side Effects of CBD and Medicine Interactions

The strength of CBD oil can influence how much cannabidiol is contained in a measured volume, but it does not predict how an individual will respond.

Potential side effects associated with CBD may include:

  • Drowsiness or changes in alertness

  • Digestive discomfort

  • Diarrhoea

  • Reduced appetite

  • Irritability or mood changes

  • Effects on liver enzymes

  • Interactions with medicines

CBD may alter the way certain medicines work, and other medicines may affect how CBD is processed by the body. [2]

Consult a qualified healthcare professional before taking CBD if you:

  • Use prescription or non-prescription medication

  • Have an existing medical condition

  • Have concerns about liver health

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Are under 25

  • Experience unexpected effects after using CBD

Do not drive or operate machinery if a CBD product causes drowsiness or impaired alertness.

Does Stronger CBD Oil Provide Greater Benefits?

Not necessarily.

The concentration of CBD describes the amount of cannabidiol in the oil. It does not guarantee:

  • Better results

  • Faster effects

  • Greater effectiveness

  • Improved sleep

  • Relief from pain or anxiety

  • Suitability for a specific condition

The potential benefits of CBD remain an area of research, and most retail CBD oils have not been authorised as medicines.

A customer’s experience with CBD does not prove that the same product or strength will affect another person in the same way.

Comparing CBD Oil with Gummies and Capsules

CBD strength is presented differently across product formats.

CBD Capsules

Capsules usually show a fixed amount of CBD per capsule.

For example:

  • 10mg of CBD per capsule

  • 30 capsules

  • 300mg of CBD in the complete package

This makes the labelled amount per unit easy to identify, although the safety and legal status of the product must still be considered.

CBD Gummies

CBD gummies commonly show:

  • CBD per gummy

  • Number of gummies

  • Total CBD in the package

A pack containing 30 gummies with 10mg of CBD each contains 300mg in total.

The amount per gummy should not be confused with a recommended daily CBD intake.

CBD Oil Drops

CBD oil allows the volume used to be adjusted, but estimating the amount through drops can be less precise than using a measured pipette.

The concentration should always be calculated using CBD per ml before estimating CBD per drop.

How to Compare the Price of CBD Oils

A higher bottle price does not necessarily mean the product is more expensive per milligram of CBD.

To compare products, calculate:

Price per mg of CBD = product price ÷ total CBD in milligrams

Example

  • Product A costs €40 and contains 500mg CBD

  • €40 ÷ 500mg = €0.08 per mg

  • Product B costs €60 and contains 1,000mg CBD

  • €60 ÷ 1,000mg = €0.06 per mg

Product B costs more initially but less per milligram.

Price per mg should not be the only consideration. Also review:

  • Ingredients

  • Spectrum type

  • Laboratory testing

  • Product origin

  • Carrier oil

  • Batch traceability

  • Supplier reliability

  • THC information

How to Check Whether CBD Oil Contains What the Label Claims

The growing CBD market includes products of varying quality.

Before purchasing, check whether the CBD content listed on the label is supported by:

  • A current Certificate of Analysis

  • A matching batch or lot number

  • A recognised laboratory

  • Clear cannabinoid results

  • Consistent milligram and percentage information

  • Ingredient and supplier details

The total amount of CBD in the product should correspond reasonably with its declared concentration and bottle volume.

A laboratory result for CBD potency does not automatically prove that the product has also been tested for pesticides, heavy metals, solvents or microorganisms.

CBD Oil Strength FAQs

What Is CBD Oil Strength?

CBD oil strength describes the concentration of cannabidiol in the finished oil. It is commonly expressed as a percentage or in milligrams of CBD per ml.

What Is the Difference Between Strength and Potency?

In everyday CBD marketing, strength and potency are generally used to describe concentration. Neither term determines the correct amount for an individual to use.

What Strength of CBD Oil Should I Take?

There is no universal strength suitable for every customer.

Compare CBD per ml, read the manufacturer’s instructions and seek professional guidance where appropriate. Greenhouse does not recommend a personalised strength or dosage.

Is 10% CBD Oil Strong?

A 10% CBD oil commonly contains approximately 100mg of CBD per ml.

Whether a manufacturer describes this as low, medium or high strength depends on its own product range. There is no universal classification.

Is Higher-Strength CBD Better?

No. A higher-strength product simply contains more CBD in the same volume.

It may be more concentrated, but it is not automatically more effective, safer or better quality.

How Much CBD Is in a 10ml Bottle?

That depends on the concentration.

Typical examples include:

  • 5%: approximately 500mg

  • 10%: approximately 1,000mg

  • 15%: approximately 1,500mg

  • 20%: approximately 2,000mg

Always confirm the figures on the product label.

How Do I Calculate CBD per ml?

Divide the total CBD in milligrams by the bottle volume.

For example:

1,000mg ÷ 10ml = 100mg per ml.

How Do I Calculate CBD per Drop?

Divide CBD per ml by the number of drops per ml stated by the manufacturer.

Do not assume that every dropper produces exactly the same number or size of drops.

Is 10mg of CBD a Low Dose?

The expression “low dose” has no universal meaning across all CBD products and customers.

Ten milligrams may refer to a capsule, gummy, measured serving or part of a bottle. It should not automatically be interpreted as a safe or appropriate daily amount.

Can I Take CBD Oil Every Day?

Daily CBD intake raises questions about cumulative exposure, medicine interactions and long-term safety.

Follow applicable product information and seek advice from a healthcare professional rather than relying on general online dosage recommendations.

What If I Am New to CBD?

If you are new to CBD, begin by understanding the product rather than choosing the strongest oil.

Check:

  • CBD per ml

  • Bottle size

  • Ingredients

  • Spectrum type

  • THC information

  • Product instructions

  • Laboratory report

  • Warnings and contraindications

Does the Best CBD Oil Have the Highest Concentration?

No. The best CBD product is not automatically the one with the largest number on the bottle.

Quality also depends on composition, documentation, traceability, lab testing and whether the product matches the customer’s requirements.

Can CBD Oil Interact with Medicine?

Yes. CBD may affect certain medicines, and medicines may alter how CBD is processed.

Customers taking medication should consult an appropriately qualified healthcare professional before using an ingestible CBD product.

Is Hemp Seed Oil a CBD Product?

Not by itself.

Hemp seed oil is produced from seeds and naturally contains little or no CBD. It becomes a CBD oil only when cannabidiol or hemp extract is added and correctly declared.

Choose CBD Oil with Clear Strength Information

A useful CBD oil label should make it easy to identify:

  • Total CBD content

  • Bottle volume

  • CBD per ml

  • Ingredients

  • Cannabinoid spectrum

  • THC information

  • Batch number

  • Product instructions

  • Available laboratory results

Understanding CBD oil strength makes it easier to compare products without confusing concentration, bottle size and dosage.
